Frequently Asked Questions

If you have other questions, please contact the APSA Development team at 202-483-2512 or [email protected].

Why does APSA ask for donations?

Nonprofit organizations like APSA are never 100% dependent on dues and registration fees to cover all their expenses. Increasing fees could lower the ability of political scientists from all fields of inquiry and regions to participate in our global community. We supplement funding with annual fundraising activities and, from time to time, capital campaigns.

What level of giving is expected?

Ideally, a gift amount reflects your commitment to APSA, your desire to support the profession, and your individual circumstances. Everyone is encouraged to give to the best of their ability, and we understand that means different things at different times. We simply ask you to make a gift that is meaningful to you.

Is giving every year necessary?

High participation rates among the political science community are a vote of confidence – a sign that members and others invest in our future and support our mission. APSA wouldn’t be the same without gifts of time and talent from members, and charitable contributions at any amount, every year, enables APSA to continue serving the needs of political scientists around the world.

Why is giving important?

Because the entire membership directly benefits from Annual Giving, all members are asked to contribute to the best of their ability. For example, almost every endowed award and many programs are funded directly by the generosity of others. We strive for 100% member participation because high participation builds community and inspires others to give.

How are donations used?

Donors choose where the money goes, and there are lots of incredible causes at APSA to support. While unrestricted gifts to the APSA Annual Fund are what we need most, we are always happy to receive funds that support specific program areas.

What is Annual Giving and Capital Giving?

Annual gifts are solicited and given every year to help fund immediate needs. Gifts to a capital campaign like Generation to Generation Campaign for the Ralph J. Bunch Fund are usually pledged over a three-year period and support long-term projects. It is our hope that everyone will be able to participate in both to whatever extent possible.

Are donations tax-deductible?

All donations are 100% deductible for your tax purposes. Most people give by December 31 to receive a tax deduction for the current year. The American Political Science Association is a recognized 501(c)(3) non-profit organization under FEIN 53-0200001.
