Jim Blanchard was named ambassador to Canada in May 1993, after serving two terms as governor of Michigan (1983-1991) and four terms as a member of the US Congress (1975-1983). In 1992, he chaired President Bill Clinton’s successful campaign in Michigan. He is currently a partner of DLA Piper Rudnick Gray Cary in Washington, D.C.
The governor’s eight years as Michigan’s chief executive were notable for his success in turning around Michigan’s finances, working with the private sector to attract business investment and trade from around the world. Governor Blanchard won national acclaim for his innovative approaches to economic development, education, crime fighting, environment protection and helping children and families.
Newsweek credited Governor Blanchard with leading “one of the most dramatic economic turnabouts in the recent history of state government” and national publications such as US News and World Report listed Jim Blanchard among the best governors in America, one of the innovators and energizers who made things work in as era of declining federal aid.
Jim Blanchard remains active in Michigan and US-Canada relations. In 1997, he authored “Behind the Embassy Door”, a book highlighting his experiences as Ambassador to Canada. He also serves on he board of directors of several corporations and co-chaired the American Assembly project on US-Canada relations hosted by Columbia University.

Former State Senator/Current Lansing Mayor, Virg Bernero
Plenary Session of MCPS
Mayor Virg Bernero has many years of experience as a public servant, having served as a legislative aide in Michigan’s House of Representatives and Senate, as an Ingham County Commissioner and as State Representative and Senator for the Lansing area. On November 8, 2005 he was elected Mayor of Lansing.
A leading advocate for mental health and children’s services, Senator Bernero has been active in a wide variety of civic affairs and human service issues. He is a past board member of the Capital Area Girl Scout Council and served on the Clinton-Eaton-Ingham Community Mental Health Board, Capital Area Community Services Board of Directors and the Michigan Association of Counties Human Services Board. He was recognized by the Michigan Association of School Psychologists in November, 2003 for his exemplary advocacy on behalf of Michigan’s children. In August 2004, the Michigan Association for Local Public Health presented him with the “Friend of Public Health” advocacy award.
Mayor Bernero is a 1986 graduate of Adrian College were he received his B.A. in Political Science with honors. He received the Young Alumni Award for outstanding achievement from his alma mater in 2004.
