CONFERENCE THEMES
The MCPS Board at its planning meeting discussed organizing the conference along two major themes: (1) globalization, (2) emphasizing student research. However, we also invite people to submit papers which do not directly address the themes.
Given the current international political events and their significance to all parts of the globe, it would be relevant to organize the conference papers, panels, and speakers around the theme of globalization. The panels and paper-presenters can examine the impact of globalization on various sub-disciplines of political science. Some suggested topics include: the State of Nation States, Ethnic Conflict in Global Politics, Global Security Efforts, International Organizations, Human rights versus States’ Rights, Developing States in the International Political Economy, Regional Economic Integration, Environmental Policy and globalization, Role of Multinational Corporations and Non-Governmental Organizations in contemporary Political Economy, Globalization and its Discontents etc.
The second theme of promoting student research is important in developing the discipline of political science and increasing student involvement in government and politics. We can address this theme in two ways. First, as many of us as possible can organize student panels where both graduate and undergraduate students can present their research at the conference. Second, participants can present papers on various issues related to encouraging and promoting intellectual and hands-on engagement of the new generation into the world of politics. These panels can be presented in lieu of the teaching panels that have been somewhat of a tradition at MCPS conferences. In addition, we will have lunch and dinner keynote speakers who can prepare their addresses expanding on the two themes. As usual we will have a panel on Michigan Politics. To give you some food for thought, last year’s
Conference included these panels:
Ø Elections 2000 and Beyond
Ø International Relations Theory
Ø Environmental Politics
Ø Political Theory and Liberalism
Ø Teaching Leadership Skills
Ø Nonprofit Organizations
Ø Religion and Politics
