University of Florida I have enjoyed serving as chair of the Legislative Studies Section for the last two years. I wish to thank all those who have helped with the section's business. As you know, one of the heaviest responsibilities falls on the program organizer for legislative panels at the national meeting. Larry Evans of the College of William and Mary and Peverill Squire of the University of Iowa, in successive years, have put together outstanding programs. Next year Patricia Freeman of the University of Tennessee will serve as the program organizer. If you have general ideas or suggestions for the program, you may contact her, but please see the application forms in the annual program or PS (forms are sent directly to APSA). The LSS Newsletter continues to serve us well, now published out of the Carl Albert Center at the University of Oklahoma, ably edited by Ron Peters, Gary Copeland, and Cindy Simon Rosenthal, and supplemented by Burdett Loomis, who edits "Extension of Remarks". I wish to thank them and staff member LaDonna Sullivan for their fine work. Members finishing a two-year term as section
officers include Secretary/Treasurer Wendy Schiller and Council Members
Keith Hamm, Gary Jacobson, and Elaine Swift. Thanks to them in advance
for their advice and support. Several colleagues have generously served
on our award committees also. I know that I can speak for the membership
in expressing appreciation for their dedication to scholarship. This year
we have three awards to make, the Fenno Prize, the CQ Press Award, and
the Carl Albert Dissertation Award. These awards will be made at our annual
meeting, 5:30-6:30 p.m., Friday, September 3. Please plan to attend and
to congratulate these winners.
