     Discussion Forum Guidelines

Many long-running listserves such as INT-LAW, and the ASILforum have a particularly useful set of good practices that this discussion forum has also adapted.

      1. Please include your name and e-mail address in the body of your message to ensure that it is always clear who a message is from.

      2. Use this forum only for messages to the whole group. Do not send a message to a specific person via this forum. Do not post personal messages to the entire list.

      3. DO put in your subject line brief but distinctive phrases to help the other subscribers decide quickly whether or not they are interested in the posting.

      4. When responding, DO retain only lines in the original message that you are responding to. Delete any lines that are not pertinent to your response.

      5. NO advertisements, whether openly or disguised (e.g., "free offer"). If a commercial interest wants to respond to a legitimate posting and wants to cite a title that it is selling, DO send that directly to the original poster. Should an ad get posted, DON'T respond on this forum.

      6. NO personal, rather casual or any messages that are meant for individuals. Send these directly to the individuals.

      7. NO trivia, e.g., using this forum to test your e-mail system or just saying hello. NO "me-too" postings.

      8. NO spamming. While most of these can be filtered, every now and then one will get through. Just ignore it. Responding will just make the situation worse. Usually spammers are not subscribed or will quickly unsubscribe, therefore they will not read your public protests. If you can't ignore it, then send your protest message directly to the sender and/or to the spammer's service provider.

      9. NO chain letters. Deal with them in the same manner as with spams.

      10. NO flaming. If a flame gets posted, do use with indifference or deal with in the same manner as spams. Akin to this is abusive and derogatory language.

      11. DO send administrative questions, requests, problems to apsahumanrights@yahoo.com, and NOT to the list. E.g., difficulties unsubscribing, not receiving HumanRightsAPSAmessages, etc.

      12. Using your mailer's autoresponder and sending attachments can both cause problems. DON'T let this feature apply to this discussion forum mail. When it is applied, the list owners are sent these automatic replies. They are unnecessary and a terrible waste of resources.

      13. For a variety of reasons (like changed addresses where the subscriber didn't bother to sign off under the old address, full mailboxes, one's local system having problems, etc.), the discussion forum mail intended for you may start becoming undeliverable. The list owners are sent an error report for each of these undeliverable messages and for each subscriber. To stem the tide, the corresponding subscribers will need to be removed as quickly as possible. To cut down on the error reports please DO

      • Keep your mailboxes cleared,
      • Sign off before your system or e-mail address changes,
      • Sign off if you are changing institutions,
      • Make sure that your system is fully functioning and sign off   temporarily if it isn't.
