"Religion and Politics in Comparative Perspective" July 1 to 12, 2013 Sponsored by the APSA and the Institute for Governance and Development, Burkina Faso APSA is pleased to announce that the 6th annual Africa Workshop will take place in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso in cooperation with the Institute for Governance and Development (IGD). The two-week program will be held from July 1-12 at the IGD's Center for Democratic Governance (CDG), on the theme of "Religion and Politics in Comparative Perspective." The organizers, with a grant from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, will cover all the costs of participation (including travel, lodging, meals, and materials) for up to 26 qualified applicants. The workshop will be conducted as a dual-language program with both English and French as working languages. The workshop leaders are Einas Ahmed (Centre d'Études et Documentation Économiques, Juridiques et Sociales, Sudan), Augustin Loada (University of Ouagadougou and IGD, Burkina Faso), Mahaman Tidjani-Alou (University Abdou Moumouni, Niger), Leonardo Villalón (University of Florida, USA), and Kenneth Wald (University of Florida, USA). L'Association Américaine Science Politique (APSA) et l'Institut Général Tiémoko Marc Garango pour la Gouvernance et le Développement (IGD) ont le plaisir de lancer un appel à candidatures pour participer à un séminaire sur le thème « Religion et politique : perspective comparative » à Ouagadougou au Burkina Faso. Ce séminaire d'une durée de deux semaines se tiendra du 1er au 12 juillet 2013 à l'IGD. Les frais de participation pour les 26 candidats retenus (voyage, hébergement, restauration, documentation) seront à la charge des organisateurs, grâce à un appui financier de la Fondation Andrew W. Mellon. Les travaux du séminaire se tiendront en Anglais et en Français. Workshop Theme / Les thèmes du séminaire For two weeks, workshop fellows will study a series of interrelated theoretical and methodological themes under the banner of "Religion and Politics in Comparative Perspective." After collaborative examination of the theoretical traditions and key concepts in the study of religion as a political factor, participants will present their own research. Discussion will focus on four key themes: 1) the relationship between religion and the state; 2) the role of religion on individual political behavior; 3) the impact of religion on the politics of gender, sexuality, and family law; and 4) the politics of inter-religious relations. Within these discussions, participants will compare and contrast the experience of the United States (and more broadly of the West) with Africa, as well as the distinct roles of religion in the Anglophone and Francophone state traditions. The workshop will interrogate potential differences of political culture within specific religious traditions: notably Christianity and Islam, but also Judaism and traditional African religious.
Au cours des deux semaines du séminaire, un ensemble de modules abordant des aspects à la fois théoriques et méthodologiques seront étudiés par les participants. Ces modules seront étroitement liés au thème général du séminaire « Religion et politique : perspective comparative ». Après un examen participatif des questions théoriques et conceptuelles sur les articulations entre religion et politique, les participants seront invités à présenter leurs propres projets de recherche.
Les discussions se focaliseront sur quatre principaux thèmes : i) les relations entre religion et État, ii) le rôle de la religion dans la structuration du comportement politique de l'individu, iii) L'impact de la religion sur la politique du genre, la sexualité et le droit de la famille, iv) la politique des rapports interreligieux. Dans le cadre de ces discussions, les participants pourront comparer et contraster l'expérience des Etats-Unis (et plus largement celle des Etats occidentaux) avec celle de l'Afrique, tout comme les différents rôles de la religion dans les Etats francophones et anglophones. Les différences potentielles entre cultures politiques développées dans les traditions religieuses spécifiques (notamment le christianisme, l'Islam, mais aussi le Judaïsme et les religions traditionnelles africaines) seront également débattues par le séminaire.
