Dakar, Senegal

In 2008, the inagural APSA Africa Workshop on "Political Particiaption" took place in Dakar, Senegal from July 6 to July 27, at the facilities of the West African Research Center (WARC). It was led by Leonard Wantchekon from New York University, Augustin Loada from the University of Ougadougou in Burkina Faso, Alioune Badara Diop from Gaston Berger University of St. Louis in Senegal, and Catherine Boone from the University of Texas at Austin.

2008 Africa Workshop

The Dakar workshop brought together 28 political scientists from across Africa and the United States. 20 Africa-based participants from 9 different countries and four US-based graduate students were competitively selected. The group included 3 women and 21 men.

The workshop was divided into six substantive modules, and sessions included a mix of lectures, discussions, small group work, and presentations. In addition to the required readings (click here for the 2008 Reading List), sessions were enhanced by guest speakers and local outings, including a trip to Goree Island (click here for the 2008 Workshop Schedule). Throughout the workshop, participants also spent considerable time developing their own research papers. Following the workshop, all Africa-based participants received three years of complimentary APSA membership.
