Researching, Studying, or Teaching Abroad

Studying, researching, or teaching in a foreign university or on a project abroad can provide extraordinary opportunities and enhance your perspectives on methods, styles, and ideas.   A stint overseas allows you to explore new cultures and language, and can open gateways to unique research sources and diverse professional networks.

For undergraduates: According to recent statistics the number of American students participating in study abroad programs has grown from 62,000 in 1987-88 to over 110,000 in 1997-98. Will you be one of a growing number next year? If so, there are a number of resources on the web to assist you in finding a suitable program. These resources are valuable in identifying opportunities but check first with your university or college's international study program to find out what is available directly through your school and what outside programs you may receive credit for.   Universities often sponsor overseas programs or partner with overseas organizations to provide educational opportunties for their students.

American Institute of Indian Studies Fellowship Competition
http://www.indiastudies.org The American Institute of Indian Studies invites applications from scholars from all disciplines who wish to conduct research in India. Junior (doctoral candidates), Senior long-term, Senior short-term, and scholarly/professional development scholarships are available.

Fulbright Scholar Program
http://www.iie.org/cies/ Established in 1946 under Congressional legislation introduced by former Senator J. William Fulbright of Arkansas, the flagship international exchange program sponsored by the U.S. Government, the Fulbright Program is designed to "increase mutual understanding between the people of the United States and the people of other countries." Opportunities are available to a wide range of applicants, both faculty and graduate students to over 140 countries.

CEP Visiting Lecturer Program

The Civic Education Project offers the opportunity for academics holding an advanced degree in a social science, law, or journalism to teach and mentor for a year in one of the countries of the regions where the CEP operates.

German Marshall Fund Programs

Since its inception, the German Marshall Fund has brought Americans and Europeans together to increase understanding and to build future transatlantic networks among the political, media, business, and nonprofit communities.  GMF works closely with partner organizations to sponsor a range of fellowship and exchange programs designed to provide both broad cultural exposure and more targeted opportunities for learning about specialized policy areas.

IREX is an international nonprofit organization specializing in education, independent media, Internet development, and civil society programs. Through training, partnerships, education, research, and grant programs, IREX develops the capacity of individuals and institutions to contribute to their societies.

Institute of International Education
IIE is the largest educational and cultural exchange organization in the U.S. The IIE Passport portal makes available the expanded contents of the IIE study abroad directories which it has published for 50 years. The site allow searches using as many as 35 criteria across the database which contains over 5000 listings.

Goabroad.com
A wide-ranging site that allows searching for study abroad programs, language schools, and international internships. The site's search engine allows users to search by country or subject or a combination of both.

Studyabroad.com
Studyabroad.com offers listings for study abroad programs in over 100 countries. In list format users can view academic year and semester programs, along with English language training, internship, law, and business programs. The site also features a discussion board, financial aid tips, and weekly email announcement option.

Rock Bottom Study Abroad
The Study Abroad Directory is a service of The International Study and Travel Center (ISTC) a not-for-profit student organization at the University of Minnesota--Twin Cities. The site allows users to search by country, subject, and length of stay. It also includes listings for language programs.

Petersons Education Center
From the company that produces annual print guides to colleges and universities, Petersons online Education Center offers a search feature for study abroad programs.

Council on International Education Exchange
The Council on International Educational Exchange is a leading U.S. non-governmental international education organization. CIEE creates and administers programs that allow high school and university students and educators to study and teach abroad. 

American Council of Learned Societies (ACLS) Fellowship Programs 
The ACLS offers several fellowship programs that support American scholarship abroad.

"Study Abroad" in Washington, D.C. 
The Washington Internship Institute offers opportunities for working in foreign embassies in Washington, D.C. through its Embassy and Diplomatic Scholars program.

CDS International
Training, fellowship, and internship opportunities abroad. 

The Fund for American Studies 
The Fund for American Studies (TFAS) brings together the brightest students from around the world for an intense academic and cross-cultural experience.  They currently have programs in Prague, Greece, and Hong Kong.

National Consortium for Study in Africa 
Promotes study in Africa and seeks to improve the quality of programs.  Includes links to semester through full-year programs, volunteer opportunities, and information for those considering study in Africa.

Fulbright-Diplomatic Academy Visiting Professor of International Relations (2008-09)
This four month grant provides an opportunity to teach three graduate level courses at the Diplomatic Academy of Vienna in both the Diploma Program and the Master of Advanced International Studies Program. The application deadline is August 1, 2007.

Opportunities in France

Ecole des Chartes Exchange Fellowship
This fellowship provides a monthly stipend and free tuition for an American or Canadian graduate student to study at the Ecole Nationale des Chartes in Paris for a period of three months in the fall of 2007. The Ecole des Chartes is the oldest institution in Europe specializing in the archival sciences, including paleography, bibliography, textual editing, and the history of the book. Applicants should explain how taking classes at the Ecole will aid them in their dissertation research. Opportunities in Germany

Berlin Program for Advanced German and European Studies 
The Berlin Program for Advanced German and European Studies offers up to one-year of research support at the Freie Universitat Berlin. It is open to scholars in all social science and humanities disciplines, including historians working on the period since the mid-19th century.

German Chancellor Fellowship Program 
Since 1990, the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation has awarded several German Chancellor Scholarships annually to prospective leaders from the U.S.A. in the academic, economic and political fields, enabling them to carry out research projects of their own choice in Germany.

German Academic Exchange Service 
This organization provides information and financial support for study or research in Germany.

Herzog August Bibliothek Wolfenbuttel Fellowship
Applicants for long- and short-term fellowships at the Newberry may also ask to be considered for this joint fellowship providing an additional two-month fellowship in Wolfenbuttel , Germany. The proposed project should link the collections of both libraries; applicants should plan to hold both fellowships sequentially to ensure continuity of research. The Hansard Scholars Programme  
From the Hansard Society website: "Are you an undergraduate interested in politics and current affairs? Newberry Library/British Academy Fellowship for Study in Great Britain
In cooperation with the British Academy, the Newberry Library offers an exchange fellowship for up to three months' study in Great Britain in any field in which the Newberry's collections are strong. This post-doctoral award pays a small amount per month; the Fellow's home institution is expected to continue to pay his or her salary. The Awards Committee gives preference to readers and staff of the Newberry and to scholars who have previously used the Library.
