John F. Kennedy: History, Memory, and Legacy - An Interdisciplinary Conference Dates: September 25 - 27, 2008 The University of North Dakota will be hosting an interdisciplinary conference relating to the life and times of John F. Kennedy from September 25 to 27, 2008, in Grand Forks, ND. President Kennedy’s Special Counsel & Advisor, and Speechwriter, Theodore Sorensen will be one of the keynote speakers for the conference. Please make plans to attend and encourage others to join us! We invite proposals for papers that address issues of the “Kennedy years.” Topic areas of particular interest for proposals would include, but not need to be limited to, the following: Presidential Politics; the Media; Civil Rights; Human Rights; Peace Corps; Mass; Conservation and Environmental Protection; Education; The Spirit of Public Service; Space Exploration; The Cold War; Nuclear Arms and Arms Control; Crises: Berlin, Cuba, and Vietnam; Film and Literary Representations; Women’s Rights; and Jacqueline Kennedy. Keynote speakers and scholarly panels will examine these topics through various academic lenses, including history, literature, political science, economics, film, philosophy, law, and the sciences. The Conference anticipates publishing a volume of the proceedings. The conference plans a series of evening plenary sessions, each of them addressed by a notable figure. John F. Kennedy’s Special Counsel & Advisor, and Speechwriter, Theodore Sorensen and U. S. District Court Judge John R. Tunheim, former Chair of the John F. Kennedy Assassination Records Review Board, have both accepted an invitation to be a keynote speaker for the conference. We have also extended invitations to: Senator Edward M. Kennedy, John Shattuck, Richard Reeves, David Talbot, Vincent Bugliosi, Don DeLillo, Doris Kearns Goodwin, Senator John Glenn, and Robert MacNamara. A film festival, with related discussions, will accompany the conference. The festival will feature movies covering the president's life such as PT109, Thirteen Days, and JFK, as well as topical period films such as To Kill a Mockingbird, The Hustler, Breakfast at Tiffany’s, A Raisin in the Sun, and Lilies of the Field. In addition, the conference will make available to the public an archival presentation of Kennedy era documents, artifacts, audio-visual, and materials. Please send abstracts of 200-250 words for individual papers or 800-1000 words for panel sessions to jfkconference@und.nodak.edu by April 15, 2008.
