Realities of Race | Intersecting Oppressions, Uniting Resistance

Dates: March 17-21, University of British Columbia, Point Grey campus
Call for Proposals Deadline: Monday, January 14, 2008

This year's Realities of Race 2008 Organizing Committee invites proposals for events to host as part of the Fourth Annual Realities of Race Week at UBC's Point Grey campus. The theme for this year's series of events, running from March 17 to 20, is: "Intersecting Oppressions, Uniting Resistance." By choosing this theme, we hope to focus on the multiple forms of oppression that work alongside racism in our society, as well as celebrating the ways that people resist these oppressions.

The purpose of Realities of Race is to heighten awareness of racism – on the global as well as local fronts – and to encourage members of our university community to take action for positive change. Located on unceded Musqueam territory, in a post-9/11 climate of heightened (in)security and racial profiling, and in a country increasing its military involvement at home and abroad, we seek to recognize the multiple connections between our location at UBC and our roles and responsibilities as members of society, communities, and as individuals.

If you are interested in volunteering with Realities of Race Week, please send an email to ubc.realities.of.race.week@gmail.com or call 604-822-9319.
