APSA is currently accepting nominations for the 2011 CQ Press Award for Teaching Innovation. The submission deadline is June 1, 2011. The award carries a $500 cash stipend and recognizes a political scientist who has developed an effective new approach to teaching in the discipline. The award seeks to honor a wide range of new directions in teaching. For example, one year, a professor might be chosen because of an innovative course syllabus, and in another year, a professor may be honored for using a new multimedia approach to reach students. The only limits on what will be recognized are the imagination and creativity of those teaching political science. Please visit the award page for more information.

  4. THE PROFESSION
    1. Tribute to David Broder from APSA Congressional Fellowship Director
The passing of David S. Broder, Pulitzer Prize-winning columnist for the Washington Post, was a loss for the political science community and the Association, as well as for the nation. David Broder demonstrated mindful respect for, and use of, political science scholarship in journalism, and was a vigorous supporter of APSA's Congressional Fellowship Program. A recognition of David Broder's contributions by APSA's Congressional Fellowship Program director Jeffrey Biggs is online. Read the full tribute (PDF).

    2. APSA and the Federal Budget Debate
The Association continues to monitor Congressional debate regarding cuts in discretionary funding in FY 2011, as well as White House proposals for 2012. As this is written, continuing resolutions for FY 2011 sustain funding for social behavioral and economic sciences in the National Science Foundation, though the National Endowment for the Humanities continues to face reductions, and the U.S. Institute of Peace would lose its direct funding under terms of the House proposals. APSA members are encouraged to contact their members of Congress to express their views on federal funding priorities. Updates can be found at the websites of the Consortium of Social Science Associations and the National Humanities Alliance, of which APSA is an active member of each.
