- Social Science and Humanities Funding
APSA is actively monitoring Congressional and White House plans for social science and humanities funding, and will speak out in support of appropriate funding in these areas. We are working closely with both the Consortium of Social Science Associations (COSSA), the National Humanities Alliance (NHA), the National Coalition for History, and the Coalition for International Education. You can see updates and action alerts on the COSSA and NHA websites. Presently, both the continuing resolution for FY 2011 and the President's budget for FY 2012 show deep cuts in the National Endowment for the Humanities. You can go to the NHA website to express your views directly to your elected representative to send a brief, customizable electronic message from the Alliance's online action center.

- APSA and the Federal Budget Debate
The Association is actively monitoring the Congressional debate regarding cuts in discretionary funding for programs supporting the social sciences in next year´s budget. Some quick points to note: in the House Bill, HR 1, which is a "continuing resolution" to fund the federal government for the remaining seven months of fiscal year (FY) 2011, funding for the National Science Foundation (NSF) was reduced by 5% but the social science funding there was not singled out; the National Endowment for the Humanities budget was reduced by 13 %, roughly $20 million, and the United States Institute of Peace has lost all direct federal funding. The action against the United States Institute of Peace was unexpected, and APSA Executive Director Michael Brintnall has publicly called for the restoration of this funding.
