- ANNUAL MEETING - "POLITICAL SCIENCE AND BEYOND"
- REGISTRATION AND HOUSING OPEN NOW
APSA moves back to Chicago this year to explore "Political Science and Beyond." There’s no better place to celebrate the
diversity and potential of the political science and interdisciplinarity than in the home of the
ground-breaking social science innovation of the
various Chicago Schools of the mid-twentieth
century.
Chicago offers visitors a first-rate, world-class destination, and the
opportunity to experience its beautiful lakefront, outstanding architecture, world-renowned museums, restaurants, and much more.
***** NOTE: NEW VENUES IN CHICAGO *****
Hotel and Travel: Book your hotel room early for the best available rooms! Planning is
underway to maximize the potential of our new venues, which so far

- ORGANIZE AN ANNUAL MEETING WORKING GROUP
Annual Meeting Working Groups consist of a small group of scholars who convene throughout the duration of the conference to discuss a common topic. The Working Groups draw on the rich content of the Annual Meeting to allow small groups to interact intensively and on a sustained basis on a common set of themes. Working Groups can enrich member participation by creating a community and networking experience. There is no extra registration fee for participation in the Working Groups.
APSA will soon be announcing the guidelines for organizers and opportunities for participation. Parties considering organizing a working group should contact Ebony Ramsey at eramsey@apsanet.org.

- APSA GOVERNANCE AND PROGRAMS
- 2007 NOMINATING COMMITTEE SLATE
On February 17, 2007, after careful deliberation and consideration of the Association's Bylaws and the Council's charge by Robert Axelrod, and after canvassing the membership for suggestions as articulated in the APSA Constitution, the 2006-2007 Nominating Committee submits the following slate of elective Officers. In its deliberations, the Committee was mindful of giving due regard to diversity, geographical distribution, fields of professional interest, type of institution, academic/nonacademic employment status, as well as to the Council's guidance to take into account non-PhD granting institutions in the nomination of candidates, and to avoid selecting a nominee for President of the same gender for more than two consecutive years. You can read the full committee statement at www.apsanet.org/content_40319.cfm.
Detailed biographical information about the nominees will be printed in the July issue of PS: Political Science and Politics and will be available on the APSA website. Unless there is a contest for any elected office or offices, elective officers assume office following action at the Business Meeting on Saturday, September 1 at the Association's Annual Meeting in Chicago, Illinois. If there is a contest, then an election will be held by ballot of the entire membership. Procedures for nominations from the floor are set down in Article V (1, 2) of the APSA Constitution and Section 4 of the Business Meeting Rules.

- DEPARTMENT OF LABOR REQUIREMENTS FOR NON-U.S. CITIZEN HIRES
Please note that according to the Code of Federal Regulations
recruiting and documentation procedures for hiring college and
university teachers who are not citizens of the United States (see 20 CFR 656.18), the Department of Labor requires that "a copy of at least one advertisement for the job opportunity placed in a national professional journal, giving the name and the date(s) of publication; and which states the job title, duties, and requirements."
While posting on the APSA eJobs system reaches virtually the entire political science scholarly community and reaches thousands of qualified applicants, it does not alone meet the Department of Labor requirement. Employers who expect to review applications from non-U.S. citizens should also follow the Department of Labor directive by posting the ad in a national professional journal.
APSA has reported its concerns to the Department of Labor and has asked for future changes to the regulations. Please contact Michael Brintnall at brintnall@apsanet.org if you have questions.

- MEMBER SURVEY ON SEXUAL ORIENTATION AND PROFESSIONAL LIFE
The American Political Science Association and the Committee on the Status of Lesbians, Gays, Bisexuals, and Transgendered in the Profession are studying the relationship between sexual orientation and professional life. We urge all APSA members -- regardless of their sexual orientation -- to complete the online questionnaire, the online link for which was emailed to all members. If you'd like to participate, contact us at brajaee@apsanet.org to find out how to access the online survey. Anonymity and confidentiality will be completely protected.
Our goal is to hear from as many political scientists as possible. We recognize that this non-sampling methodology poses some limitations on analysis. If you know a political scientist who is unlikely to see this questionnaire, please forward the link to this survey to them. The APSA Committee on the Status of Lesbians, Gays, Bisexuals, and the Transgendered (LGBT) in the Profession will report on the results of this survey, and of a separate survey of department chairs, in the APSA journal PS: Political Science " Politics.

- ORGANIZED SECTION JOURNALS - MORE ACCESS TO SCHOLARSHIP
Over the past year some of the APSA Organized Sections have added journal subscriptions as part of their section membership benefits. These section journal opportunities provide access to scholarship across a number of fields and include leading journals like Political Behavior, Legislative Studies Quarterly, Urban Affairs Review, Publius, and Political Analysis. In each case, the Section has negotiated significant discounts for section members over the traditional individual subscription rate making this a great bargain for section members. Visit www.apsanet.org/section_692.cfm to see which Organized Sections offer a journal and considering adding one today.
Organized Sections promote networking among members who share an interest in a particular subfield, and provide their membership with outlets for research and opportunites for scholarship. Find out more about the Organized sections at www.apsanet.org/section_178.cfm.

- SCHOLAR SUPPORT
- BE A MENTOR - FIND A MENTOR
The APSA mentoring initiative is an opportunity for all political scientists to connect to share experience and insights about career planning, scholarship, and professional issues.
Become a Mentor
Mentors can volunteer to act as a resource for colleagues in specific areas of interest such as how to publish, how to launch a research career, how to manage career conflicts, or even how to plan for retirement. Mentors can also volunteer to be a resource for specific communities of scholars, such as groups historically underrepresented in the discipline. Or mentors may volunteer to serve as a general resource for any inquiry.
Please visit the "Become an APSA Mentor" page and review the mentoring initiative process. Be sure to complete the mentor profile to become an APSA Mentor. Once you are listed with us as a mentor, we will, from time to time, provide your name (along with others) to those seeking a mentor with your qualifications. It will then be up to the mentee to contact you directly to begin the conversation.
Find a Mentor
Graduate students, young scholars and teachers, minorities and women, senior faculty confronting retirement, or any colleagues in the discipline may wish to connect with a mentor. When you request a mentor, you will be provided with a list of contacts in the field who have expressed willingness to serve as a mentor regarding the issues you specify. You may then select from this list the individual you would like to contact, and should then directly initiate contact. Visit the "Find an APSA Mentor" page to learn more.

- IDENTIFY TALENTED MINORITY GRADUATE SCHOOL CANDIDATES
Help APSA identify talented undergraduate minorities interested in
being recruited to doctoral programs. In 1989, APSA established the
Minority Identification (MID) Project as part of its efforts to
diversify the political science profession. Faculty members in
undergraduate programs are encouraged to contact minority students
about careers in political science and then submit the names of
promising minority candidates for graduate study to the MID database.
Core Schools -- graduate programs participating in the MID Project --
actively recruit students identified in the MID database. The program
complements the important efforts already made through the Ralph Bunche
Summer Institute and Minority Fellows Program. For more information
please visit www.apsanet.org/section_428.cfm.
