  1. APSA ANNUAL MEETING
    1. Online Program Available Now
      The 2008 Online Program is now available at www.apsanet.org/mtgs/program. It will be updated regularly until the beginning of the meeting. Please rely on the Online Program as the most authoritative source of up-to-date and accurate listing of events for the 2008 Annual Meeting. The printed Preliminary Program will be mailed to members with the July issue of PS (NOTE: it is current as of mid May and members should rely on the Online Program for the most accurate information).

    2. Preregistration: Presenters Must Preregister
      APSA requires that all accepted participants to preregister for the meeting in order to be included in the Final Program. To preregister, log in to MyAPSA and follow the steps for registration. Presenters should have registered by April 25. Preregistration for attendees closes on August 1.

    3. Make Hotel and Travel Reservations by August 1
      Attendees are encouraged to use the APSA Travel Desk, provided by the American Political Science Association and our official housing provider, Travel Technology Group to book hotel accomodations and travel.     4. Panel and Paper Revisions Due by July 1
      If your contact information or affiliation has recently changed, please update it by logging in to MyAPSA and choosing "Change Your Personal Information". To request an edit to your presentation details (e.g. paper title), contact the division chair or related group organizer sponsoring your panel (roster of division chairs and related group chairs). NOTE: All revisions to your presentation must be approved by the division or related group chair before they are added to the conference program. Revisions received by July 1 will be included in the Final Program.

    5. Short Courses Now Available Online
      Details for the 2008 Short Courses are posted online. Short courses, which are held on Annual Meeting Professional Day, August 27, are half or full day sessions that provide opportunities for APSA attendees to enhance their knowledge and to reinvigorate teaching and research skills. If you would like to register for a short course, please contact the short course organizer directly.

    6. Application Deadline to Sponsor or Coordinate a Working Group is July 1
      Annual Meeting Working Groups consist of small groups of scholars who convene throughout the duration of the conference to discuss a common topic. Working Groups draw on the rich content of the Annual Meeting to allow small groups to interact intensively on a sustained basis on a common set of themes; thus they can enrich member participation by creating a community and networking experience. If you would you like to sponsor or coordinate a Working Group, please contact workinggroups@apsanet.org. Details about the Working Groups will be posted online as they are established.     7. Make Sure You Stop by the 2008 Exhibit Hall!
      The 2008 APSA Annual Meeting will host the world's largest exhibit of political science publishers and educational companies, with over 200 expected to convene in Boston's Hynes Convention Center.     8. Sign Up for Placement Interview Service
      The Annual Meeting Placement Interview Service helps candidates and employers  determine who will interview at the meeting so they can find and make contact with each other throughout the summer preceeding the meeting. At the Annual Meeting, APSA provides space and facilities for employers who have posted on eJobs to interview candidates at the Meeting. The eJobs Annual Meeting Placement Interview Service attracts over 800 candidates and employers. NOTE: All Placement Service participants, employers and candidates must be registered for the Annual Meeting. Badges must be displayed while in the Placement Service Area.     9. Business Meetings and Receptions: Deadline for Final Program is July 2
      Departments, organized sections, and related groups are invited to host a business meeting or reception during the 2008 Annual Meeting. Request forms, as well as available locations, days, and times are online. Requests that were received by April 11 will be included in the Preliminary Program, a supplement of the July issue of PS: Political Science & Politics. To be included in the Final Program distributed at the Annual Meeting, forms must be submitted no later than July 2.

    10. APSA is Going Green!
      APSA is partnering with Carbonfund.org to become a more environmentally responsible organization. APSA is offering attendees the option of offsetting their carbon footprint for attending the Annual Meeting by donating shares to CarbonFund.org. The association has designated all donated money to be used for all three of CarbonFund.Org's global projects: renewable energy, energy efficiency, and reforestation.   2. TEACHING AND LEARNING CONFERENCE
    1. 2009 Meeting Location and Dates Announced
      The 2009 Teaching and Learning Conference will be held in Baltimore, MD, February 6 - 8, 2009 at the Renaissance Baltimore Harborplace Hotel. Registration will open later this summer. Please join us for this unique meeting to promote greater understanding of cutting-edge approaches, techniques, and methodologies for the political science classroom.     2. 2009 Call for Papers Launches in July
      The call for papers for the 6th Annual Teaching and Learning Conference will open in July. The 2009 themes have yet to be determined, however, in the past, conference papers have touched on a variety of themes in political science education, such as graduate education, diversity and inequality, civic engagement, and professional development.   3. APSA PROGRAMS AND GOVERNANCE NEWS
    1. Council Will Meet June 26 in Chicago to Discuss Meeting Siting
      The APSA Council will meet on June 26 in Chicago to discuss policy about selecting sites for the Annual Meeting and other APSA conferences. The main issue relates to state laws about rights afforded to same-sex unions legally recognized in other states. Last month, the Council invited members to review documents and provide feeback on the siting issue from May 1 through May 30, 2008. We appreciate the comments we have received. Compilation of views from members, organized sections, and status committees are being taken in to consideration along with other information as the Council deliberates on this issue.

    2. Nominations Sought for Perspectives on Politics Editors
      Applications and nominations for the editor or editorial team of Perspectives on Politics are being sought for a term beginning in June 2009. Rogers Smith, University of Pennsylvania, will serve as chair of the search committee. Perspectives draws on rigorous, broad-based research and integrative thinking to provide insight on politics and the editorial process is open to innovative and novel approaches. If you have any questions about the journal, the resources that APSA provides in support of the editorial functions, or institutional commitments, please contact Michael Brintnall or Rogers Smith.

    3. New Book on Publishing in Political Science
      APSA is pleased to announce a new book on publishing in political science, Publishing Political Science: The APSA Guide to Writing and Publishing, which provides practical advice from leading political scientists and publishers on how to navigate the publishing process from the writing stage through finding the right publisher for your work and contract negotiations. Publishing Political Science describes of the current state of publishing and publishing opportunities in political science; provides guidance on writing for particular venues and audiences such as literature reviews, textbooks, journals, blogs, and reference books; and recommends practical approaches on how to build successful relationships with publishers. This first volume in APSA's new "State of the Profession" book series was edited by Stephen Yoder former Managing Editor of PS: Political Science & Politics. The next volume in the series, Assessment in Political Science, edited by Michelle Deardorff, Kerstin Hamann, and John Ishiyama, is expected to be released at the APSA Annual Meeting.     4. June Issue of Perspectives on Politics Now Online
      The June issue of Perspectives on Politics is now posted online. This month's issue features the article "Gender Inequality in Academia: Bad News From the Trenches and Some Possible Solutions". APSA members may view APSA journals by logging into their MyAPSA account and scrolling to "Access Areas". Non-members may review abstracts without charge and get full text for a fee at Cambridge Journals Online.     5. APSA Campus Teaching Awards Nominations due July 1
      Each year, APSA and Pi Sigma Alpha recognize political science faculty who received teaching awards on their own campuses during the past academic year. These faculty receive a certificate honoring their achievement and are invited to a special reception at the APSA Annual Meeting. A roster of campus-wide teaching award winners, their affiliations, and titles of their awards is featured in the Annual Meeting Program. In addition, a tribute to the teaching award recipients, including their photographs and descriptions of their awards, is published in the October issue of PS: Political Science and Politics. The deadline to submit names of award recipients is July 1.

    6. Volunteer to be an APSA Mentor
      The APSA Mentoring Program is calling for APSA faculty members to add their names to the 2008 APSA Mentor Database. The goal of the Mentoring Initiative is to provide a tool that connects, and provides opportunities for APSA members to mentor younger political scientists, both graduate students and junior faculty. You can assist APSA in its effort to provide support to students and junior faculty by becoming a mentor today. APSA is particularly looking for mentors who can address questions regarding: junior faculty issues, the graduate student experience, research funding, and career options.     7. Professor Van Vechten Named to Receive 2008 Roman & Littlefield Award
      Professor Renée Van Vechten, of the University of Redlands, Department of Government, will be awarded the 2008 Rowman & Littlefield Award for Innovative Teaching in Political Science. Dr. Van Vechten will receive the award for the work that she has done on collaborative simulations. In particular, Van Vechten created and facilitated three simultaneous and interactive simulations in her Congress course and two Introduction to American Governments Courses.     8. APSA Ralph Bunche Summer Institute is Under Way
      The 2008 Ralph Bunche Summer Institute commenced on June 1 and will end on July 3 with a celebratory banquet. The Institute, hosted and co-sponsored by Duke University, and supported by a grant from the National Science Foundation and APSA. The twenty students selected from underrepresented groups are currently participating in this academic program designed to provide them with the graduate school experience, mentoring, and possible academic opportunities. On June 20, the students will participate in the Recruitment Fair, attended by many prestigous institutions looking to recruit promising scholars.     9. 2008 APSA Africa Workshop Will Commence July 6
      The APSA Africa Workshop will take place in Dakar, Senegal at the facilities of the West African Research Center (WARC) from July 6 - 27, 2008. The workshop, organized around the theme "Political Participation," will convene 25 African scholars for an intensive intellectual experience covering substantive issues, methodologies, and reviews of research. The workshop leaders are Catherine Boone (University of Texas at Austin), Augustin Laoda (Université do Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso), Alioune Badara Diop (Université Gaston Berger, Saint-Louis, Senegal) and Leonard Wantchekon (New York University).   4. NEWS IN THE PROFESSION
    1. Call for Nominations for Women's Caucus for Political Science Awards
      The Women's Caucus for Political Science is accepting nominations for the following awards: Women of Color: Professional Accomplishment Recognition Award, designed to award women of color who have demonstrated exceptional leadership and broken barriers to achieve diversity in the field; the WCPS Mentoring Award, to honor an educator or researcher who has provided outstanding mentoring either on a one-on-one basis or as a leader in a research setting; the Alice Paul Dissertation Prospectus Award, presented to the best proposal on women and political issues in honor of women's rights activist Alice Paul. Nominations for all awards are due June 30. More.

    2. APSA Responds to Detention of Saudi Arabian Political Scientist
      In late May, APSA learned of the arrest of Dr. Matrouk al-Faleh of King Saud University in Riyad, an event which prompted APSA President Dianne Pinderhughes to write a letter of concern to His Majesty King Abdullah Bin 'Abdul 'Azziz Al-Saud. Dr. al-Fareh is allegedly being held at Buraida General Prison for expressing his political views through human rights activities and scholarly work. The letter asks for Dr. al-Faleh's immediate release, for continuing to detain him violates his freedom of expression granted to him by Article 19 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and Article 32 of the Arab Charter of Human Rights.     3. Attend the 2009 IPSA World Congress in Santiago, Chile
      The 21st International Political Science Association (IPSA) World Congress will be held July 12-16, 2009 in Santiago, Chile. The Congress will focus on the theme, "Global Discontent: Dilemmas of Change," and endeavors to connect the globalization process and challenges with critical topics of study for all political scientists.     4. Southern Political Science Association Call for Papers Deadline is July 25
      The Southern Political Science Association is accepting paper proposals for its 80th Annual Conference, January 8 - 10, 2009. Proposals from all fields of political science are welcome, particularly in the areas of: political theory, international relations, judicial politics, comparative politics, elections and voting, and women and politics. SPSA is also seeking volunteers to serve as chairs and discussants. The deadline for proposal submissions in July 25, 2008. More.

It offers visiting scholars a furnished work space, telephone, fax, computers, Internet access, conference space, a reference library, and access to George Washington University’s Gelman Library.
