    1. Acceptances Slated for Early March
      Proposal submitters will be notified by email and in MyAPSA in early March on the final status of their proposals. Contact the APSA Annual Meeting staff if you have any questions about the 2008 Annual Meeting.

      Proposal Notification: Make Sure We have Your Correct Email Address

      In early March, APSA will contact you about your Annual Meeting proposal via email. To make sure we have your correct email address, log in to MyAPSA and click on "Change personal information" to update your email address.

    2. Conference Pre-registration and Housing Opens Early March
      Pre-registration and housing for the 2008 Annual Meeting opens in early March. APSA requires all accepted participants to pre-register by April 25th in order to be included in the Preliminary Program.

      Departments, organized sections, and related groups are invited to host a business meeting or reception during the 2008 APSA Annual Meeting. Business meetings and receptions are scheduled on a first-come, first-served basis. More

    4. Short Course Applications Available Annual Meeting Short Courses are half- or full-day sessions that provide opportunities for attendees to enhance teaching and research skills. APSA organized sections, related groups, and non-APSA affiliated organizations may propose a Short Course by completing the application available on the APSA website. The deadline to submit applications is March 14, 2008.     1. Teaching Conference Papers Available Online
      The Teaching and Learning Conference, held in San Jose, CA, commences on February 22, 2008. The conferences provides a forum for scholars to share effective and innovative teaching and learning models and to discuss broad themes and values of political science education.   3. APSA PROGRAMS AND GOVERNANCE NEWS
    1. Search Continues for Next Perspectives Editor

      Applications and nominations for the editor or editorial team of Perspectives on Politics are being sought for a term beginning in June 2009. Perspectives draws on rigorous, broad-based research and integrative thinking to provide insight on politics. The editorial process is open to innovative and novel approaches. Rogers Smith, University of Pennsylvania, will serve as chair of the search committee. The committee will circulate a detailed call. In the meantime if you have any questions about the journal, the resources that APSA provides in support of the editorial functions, or institutional commitments, please contact Michael Brintnall or Rogers Smith.

    2. Call For Ralph Bunche Summer Institute Applications
      Deadline: February 29, 2008
      The Ralph Bunche Summer Institute (RBSI) is a 5-week, academically intensive summer program designed to simulate the graduate school experience, provide mentoring, and expand academic opportunities. The RBSI welcomes students from groups that are significantly underrepresented in science in the United States, e.g. African American, Latino/a, Native American, and Pacific Island students. All students who are members of these groups, or who are interested in broadening participation in political science by students from underrepresented minority populations and pursuing scholarship on issues affecting under-represented groups, are eligible to apply.     3. Review Business Rules
      The APSA Council Rules committee publishes the Business Meeting Rules annually for comment by members before final approval by Council later in the spring. These rules offer procedural direction for the handling of any proposed resolutions, amendments, and officer nominations, and for the conduct of the business meeting and elections. Please review the rules at www.apsanet.org/content_2929.cfm and send any comments or suggested changes to the Council's attention care of Hayle Ziobro at hziobro@apsanet.org. Proposed revisionswill be posted at the same web address and noted in subsequent newsletters. The final rules approved by the Council will be posted before April 1st.

    4. Organized Section to Introduce New Journal
      The Religion and Politics Organized Section is introducing a new journal, Politics and Religion, which will provide original research into all aspects of the relationship between politics and religion around the world. Find out more about this and other Organized Section journals.

    5. Awards: Recognizing Excellence
      1. APSA Career Awards: Recognizing excellence in the profession is one of the most important activities of the American Political Science Association.  Recognition can play an important role in the careers and scholarship of the recipients. Please consider nominations for the following career awards:

        John Gaus Award– Nomination Deadline Extended to March 15th
        Do you have a colleague with a lifetime of exemplary scholarship in the joint tradition of political science and public administration? The Gaus Award and Lectureship recognizes and encourages scholarship in public administration. The recipient delivers the Gaus lecture at the Annual Meeting and receives a $2,000 prize. More

        Organized Section Award Deadlines--Closer than You Might Think
        Almost all of the 35 APSA Organized Sections present awards for career, dissertations, books, and other notable activities and achievements.  Requirements vary. Deadlines for some of these are closer than you might think.  Check the links at www.apsanet.org/section_300.cfm for details. 

      2. Accepting Nominations for the Rowman and Littlefield Award
        Nominations for the 2008 Rowman and Littlefield Award will be accepted until April 1, 2008. The Rowman and Littlefield Award recognizes political scientists who have developed effective new approaches to teaching in the discipline. The award seeks to honor a wide range of new directions in teaching, not one particular new direction. More

      The February 2008 issue of American Political Science Review is online now. APSA members view this issue of APSR as well as other APSA journals by logging into your MyAPSA account and scroll to Access Areas. Non-members review abstracts without charge and get full-text for a fee at Cambridge Journals Online.       The Publications Executive Committee of the Caucus for a New Political Science announces a Call for Nominations for the position of Journal Editor to begin September 1, 2008. New Political Science, a journal of politics & culture, is currently published by Routledge/Carfax and has a substantial amount of individual and institutional subscriptions.     2. NSF Seeks Proposals for Science of Science and Innovation Initiative
      The National Science Foundation announces a new solicitation for the Science of Science and Innovation Policy (SciSIP) initiative. The program underwrites fundamental research that creates new explanatory models, analytic tools and datasets designed to inform the nation's public and private sectors about the processes through which investments in science and engineering research are transformed into social and economic outcomes.     3. New Educational Resource for African American History and Politics
      Michigan State University and Detroit Public Television announce the launch in time for Black History Month (February) of an online multimedia archive of the American Black Journal (ABJ), a Detroit Public Television program. The archive includes educator resources on African American history, including items focusing on politics and political leadership. More

    4. For Your Students: Hamilton Project Economic Policy Innovation Prize 2008
      The Hamilton Project, an initiative of the Brookings Institution, announces its second annual Economic Policy Innovation Prize competition. $25,000 in prizes will be awarded for the best innovative policy proposals written by undergraduate and graduate students. The top undergraduate student proposal will be awarded $10,000 and the top graduate student proposal will be awarded $15,000. The application deadline is August 1, 2008. More

    5. Participate in Humanities Advocacy
      The Humanities Advocacy Day, planned for March 4, 2008, in Washington, D.C., provides an opportunity for higher education leaders, college and university faculty, teachers, students, librarians, archivists, curators, and independent scholars to meet with Congressional representatives to communicate the public value of scholarly research, education, and programs in the humanities. APSA joins over 30 national professional organizations in sponsoring Humanities Advocacy Day. The day is included as a part of a the National Humanities Alliance 2008 Annual Conference. More

APSA Headquarters and Centennial Center building The Centennial Center for Political Science and Public Affairs is a great resource for doing research in Washington, DC. It offers visiting scholars a furnished work space, telephone, fax, computers, Internet access, conference space, a reference library, and access to George Washington University’s Gelman Library. Stays range from a few days to 12 months. Space is limited to APSA members and available to faculty members, post-doctoral fellows, and advanced graduate students from the U.S. and abroad.
