- ANNUAL MEETING
- CHICAGO, 2007 - "POLITICAL SCIENCE AND BEYOND"
***** NOTE: NEW VENUES FOR CHICAGO *****
APSA moves back to Chicago this year -- to new venues for the APSA meeting -- to explore "Political Science and Beyond." There’s no better place to celebrate the
diversity and potential of the political science and interdisciplinarity than in the Windy City, home of the
ground-breaking social science innovation of the
various Chicago Schools of the mid-twentieth
century.
Chicago offers visitors a first-rate, world-class destination, and the
opportunity to experience its beautiful lakefront, outstanding architecture, world-renowned museums, restaurants, and much more. APSA has changed the meeting hotels this year
to those that better embrace the heart of the city.
The 2007 Annual Meeting will be headquartered
at Chicago's Hyatt Regency and the Sheraton
Chicago Hotel & Towers. The Sheraton Chicago Hotel & Towers is located on the banks of the Chicago River; the Hyatt Regency is located just off Michigan Avenue in the heart of the Magnificent Mile. Both are within walking distance of the Navy Pier ("Chicago's lakefront playground", Millennium Park, the Loop business district, the Art Institute and more. Planning is
underway to maximize the potential of our new venues, which so far
include the Hyatt Regency and the Sheraton Chicago.
Registration will open in early March and hotel and travel information will also be posted at that time.
Get the latest
information at at www.apsanet.org/2007 and start exploring the city at www.meetinchicago.com/.

- VOLCKER JUNIOR RESEARCH GRANT PROGRAM ACCEPTING APPLICATIONS UNTIL MARCH 15
The APSA Organized Section for Public Administration invites applications and research proposals from junior scholars researching public administration issues affecting governance in the United States and abroad. Proposals will be judged on their potential to shed new light on important public administration questions, their scholarly and methodological rigor, and their promise for advancing practice and theory development. Individual grants are not renewable.
As a part of the APSA Centennial Campaign, support from the Volcker Endowment can, but need not, involve research residencies at the Centennial Center in Washington. Recipients may conduct research on issues affecting or relevant to public administration at any level (or levels) of government, in any nation (or across nations), and from whatever locale is most useful or appropriate for their research purposes.

- BE A MENTOR - FIND A MENTOR
The APSA mentoring initiative is an opportunity for all political scientists to connect to share experience and insights about career planning, scholarship, and professional issues.
Become a Mentor
Mentors can volunteer to act as a resource for colleagues in specific areas of interest such as how to publish, how to launch a research career, how to manage career conflicts, or even how to plan for retirement. Mentors can also volunteer to be a resource for specific communities of scholars, such as groups historically underrepresented in the discipline. Or mentors may volunteer to serve as a general resource for any inquiry.
Please visit the "Become an APSA Mentor" page and review the mentoring initiative process. Be sure to complete the mentor profile to become an APSA Mentor. Once you are listed with us as a mentor, we will, from time to time, provide your name (along with others) to those seeking a mentor with your qualifications. It will then be up to the mentee to contact you directly to begin the conversation.
Find a Mentor
Graduate students, young scholars and teachers, minorities and women, senior faculty confronting retirement, or any colleagues in the discipline may wish to contact mentor. When you request a mentor, you will be provided with a list of contacts in the field who have expressed willingness to serve as a mentor regarding the issues you specify. You may then select from this list the individual you would like to contact, and should then directly initiate contact. Visit the "Find an APSA Mentor" page to learn more.

- IDENTIFY TALENTED MINORITY GRAD SCHOOL CANDIDATES
Help APSA identify talented undergraduate minorities interested in
being recruited to doctoral programs. In 1989, APSA established the
Minority Identification (MID) Project as part of its efforts to
diversify the political science profession. Faculty members in
undergraduate programs are encouraged to contact minority students
about careers in political science and then submit the names of
promising minority candidates for graduate study to the MID database.
Core Schools -- graduate programs participating in the MID Project --
actively recruit students identified in the MID database. The program
complements the important efforts already made through the Ralph Bunche
Summer Institute and Minority Fellows Program. For more information
please visit www.apsanet.org/section_428.cfm.

This fund helps promote recruitment, retention, and promotion of Latino/a political scientists. It provides Latino/a graduate students travel grants to attend the APSA Annual Meeting and supports research residencies at the Centennial Center for Political Science and Public Affairs.
This endowment met its initial fundraising goal in 2003, and is closing in on its second-phase target, to enable it to fund more and larger projects. Whether you are making your first gift to the Fund, or you are recommitting your continued support, you can help support Latino scholarship today.

- IN THE SECTIONS: LAW & COURTS SEEKS NEWSLETTER EDITOR
The APSA Law and Courts Section seeks a new editor for its newsletter Law and Courts . The newsletter is a vital source of information for Section members and publishes important exchanges and debates about developments in the law and courts field. It is published electronically three times a year (Winter, Spring and Summer). The editorship is an excellent opportunity for leadership and service to the discipline. It also offers a chance to meet a range of other law and courts scholars and help to shape discourse in the field.
The new editor will be responsible for the Winter 2008 issue. The position is appointed for a three-year term and requires a modest time commitment (3-4 hours per month). Familiarity or previous experience maintaining electronic mailing lists and with Adobe Pagemaker software would be helpful but is not necessary.
Nominations and self-nominations should include a short letter outlining interest in the position and ideas for the newsletter, and a current vitae. They should be sent to Mitch Pickerill, Chair of the Search Committee, at mitchp@wsu.edu, by March 1, 2007. You may also contact the other members of the Search Committee, Sara Benesh at sbenesh@uwm.edu or Kathleen Sullivan at sullivak@ohio.edu.
