  1. APSA ANNUAL MEETING
    1. Use the Online Program to Plan Your Schedule
      The 2008 Online Program is available at: www.apsanet.org/mtgs/program. It will be updated regularly until the beginning of the meeting. Please rely on the Online Program as the most authoritative source of up-to-date and accurate listing of events for the 2008 Annual Meeting. Attendees are encouraged to consult the Online Program to make their final plans for the meeting. Preregistered attendees can see the meeting locations through the Online Program once they login to MyAPSA.

    2. Preregistration Has Closed; Registration Available Onsite
      APSA requires all accepted participants to register to take part in the APSA Annual Meeting and Exhibition. Although preregistration has closed, registration is available onsite beginning on Wednesday, August 27, at 8:00 a.m. To register at the meeting, please visit the Pre-Function Area of Hall A at the Hynes Convention Center.

    3. Presenters Must Upload Papers to PROceedings
      APSA strongly encourages all presenters to upload their papers to the Annual Meeting database, PROceedings. Each presenter should have received login and password information in an email from All Academic. Please upload your papers to PROceedings by visiting the Conference Papers page on the website.

    4. Get Ready for Toronto: Apply for a Passport at the Annual Meeting
      To help you prepare for the 2009 Annual Meeting in Toronto, Canada, APSA will be offering travel services in the APSA Pavilion, located in Hall A of the Hynes Convention Center. APSA has arranged for the United States Postal Service to take passport photos and accept applications onsite. Please make sure to bring all necessary documents and fees for this service. Fees and checklists for both first time applicants and renewal applicants are available on the U.S. Department of State’s website. Representatives from Toronto will also be available to answer questions and provide information about the city.

    5. Audio Visual Aids for Presenters; LCD Projectors Will be Available
      This year, in addition to providing overhead projectors and screens, APSA has also added LCD projectors and all necessary cables to each of the panel rooms for use by presenters. However, APSA will not be offering laptops for panel use. We recommend that you coordinate the use of one laptop with your co-presenters in order to minimize time spent on technical issues.

    6. Submit Questions to the "Great Debate"
      At the 2008 meeting, APSA will host two Great Debates. The first, "Rationalist-Constructivist Debates in International Relations" will feature Martha Finnemore (George Washington University) and James Morrow (University of Michigan), and will be moderated by Jack Levy (Rutgers University). This special event will take place at noon on Friday, August 29. At the second Great Debate, "Immigration and the Future of the United States," the spotlight will be on Gary Segura (Stanford University) and Peter Skerry (Boston College), with moderation by James Johnson (University of Rochester). This Great Debate will take place at 4:15 p.m. on Friday. Members are invited to submit questions for the Great Debates. Selected questions will be posed to debaters, and if your question is chosen, you will ask it at the event. Questions should address the general theme of the debate as given in its title, and may be written as a question for both debaters or directed specifically toward one of the debaters.

  2. TEACHING AND LEARNING CONFERENCE
    1. 2009 TLC Early Registration Now Open
      The 2009 Teaching and Learning Conference will be held in Baltimore, MD, February 6-8, 2009, at the Renaissance Baltimore Harborplace Hotel. Registration for the conference is now open.     2. 2009 TLC Call for Papers Now Open; Deadline is September 19
      The call for papers for the 6th Annual Teaching and Learning Conference is now open. Submissions will be accepted across a wide variety of themes ranging from Diversity, Inclusiveness, and Inequality to Simulations and Role Play and Graduate Education and Professional Development.   3. APSA PROGRAMS AND GOVERNANCE NEWS

    1. Meeting Siting Policy Background Materials Now Online
      On June 26, 2008, the APSA Council met in special session to consider site selection policy for the Annual Meeting. The council voted to take state policies into account along with city practices, to have greater public and scholarly engagement with localities where APSA meets, and to continue with the 2012 meeting in New Orleans. In articulating new policy for siting APSA meetings, the council addressed the difficulties posed by state laws restricting rights afforded to recognized same-sex unions. Background materials, the council committee report, and further details about council decisions broadening APSA's meeting siting policy are posted online.

    2. Call for Applications for Leaders for 2009 Workshop in Accra, Ghana
      APSA is pleased to announce a call for applications from U.S.-based APSA members interested in organizing a team of leaders for a three-week political science workshop, scheduled to take place in Accra, Ghana, in the summer of 2009. Supported by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, the 2009 Accra workshop is part of an ongoing three-year effort to organize annual residential political science workshops in Africa. The workshop will bring together up to 30 scholars and cover substantive issues, methodologies, and reviews of research. The first Africa Workshop, convened on the theme of "Political Participation" in Dakar, Senegal, successfully concluded on July 27. Information about the 2008 workshop in Dakar, including a list of participants, photo gallery, and reading materials, is now online.     4. 2009 Conference for Chairs
      The third APSA Conference for Chairs will be held in Baltimore, MD, in conjunction with the Teaching and Learning Conference.  Additional details on the content will be provided in early September.  Department chairs: start your planning now to be in Baltimore from February 5-6, 2009.  The Conference for Chairs is a unique opportunity to meet with other political science department chairs in an informal setting, discuss trends in the field, and explore common challenges and opportunities.     5. Two New APSA Books: Publishing and Assessment in Political Science
      APSA is pleased to announce the first two volumes in APSA's new "State of the Profession" book series. Publishing Political Science: The APSA Guide to Writing and Publishing, provides practical advice from leading political scientists and publishers on navigating the publishing process from writing to publishing and all stages in between. Publishing Political Science also offers guidance on writing for particular venues and audiences such as literature reviews, textbooks, journals, blogs, and reference books. Assessment in Political Science, edited by Michelle Deardorff, Kerstin Hamann, and John Ishiyama, offers resources for classroom, departmental and program assessment to all types of departments and institutions. In addition to general assessment tools, the authors provide guidance on assessing learning in special situations such as in online environments and experiential programs. Assessment in Political Science is expected to be released in September and preview copies will be available at the APSA Annual Meeting. Order these new books online.

    6. Upcoming Issue of APSR Online Soon
      Articles from the August APSR will be posted online in the coming weeks. The print version will circulate to members in late September. APSA members may view APSA journals by logging into their MyAPSA account and scrolling to "Access Areas." Non-members may review abstracts without charge and get full text for a fee at Cambridge Journals Online. The table of contents and symposium are available free of charge to all at www.apsanet.org/section_327.cfm.

    7. Volunteer to be an APSA Mentor
      The APSA Mentoring Program is calling for APSA faculty members to add their names to the 2008 APSA Mentor Database. The goal of the Mentoring Initiative is to provide a tool that connects and provides opportunities for APSA members to mentor younger political scientists, both graduate students and junior faculty. You can assist APSA in its effort to provide support to students and junior faculty by becoming a mentor today. APSA is particularly looking for mentors who can address questions regarding: junior faculty issues, the graduate student experience, research funding, and career options.     8. Submit Names to the Minority Student Recruitment Program
      APSA is calling on departments to identify undergraduate minority students who are interested in pursuing, or learning more about, graduate work in the field. APSA will share the information collected with interested graduate programs through the APSA Minority Student Recruitment Program (MSRP). Encourage your department to participate in MSRP by submitting student information or by becoming a MSRP Recruiting School.

  4. NEWS IN THE PROFESSION

    1. Seeking Female Scholars Who Have Run for Public Office
      Barbara Burrell (Northern Illinois University) and Jackie DeLaat (Marietta College) are undertaking a research project on female political scientist faculty members who have run for public office. It can be for any elective office in the public domain from school board, village trustee, on up to president. They are seeking individuals who have run regardless of whether they won or not. If you are such an individual or know of someone who fits that criterion, please forward that information to one of them. They plan to conduct indepth interviews with these women about their experiences as candidates and officeholders.

    2. NAS Call for Nominations for Award on Prevention of Nuclear War Research
      The National Academy of Sciences seeks nominations for the Award for Behavioral Research Relevant to the Prevention of Nuclear War. The award, presented with a prize of $20,000, recognizes research that advances understanding of problems or issues relating to the risk of nuclear war. Nominations will be accepted until September 15. The award is scheduled to be presented in 2009. Learn more at the National Academy of Sciences website.

    3. National Science Foundation Issues Program Solicitation for Minerva Initiative
      The National Science Foundation (NSF) has released the program solicitation "Social and Behavioral Dimensions of National Security, Conflict and Cooperation (NSCC)”, NSF 08-594, inviting proposals for social science research on national security topics. The solicitation is part of Minerva Initiative, a university-based social and behavioral science research activity initiated jointly by the NSF and the Department of Defense (DoD). The Minerva Initiative has been launched by the Secretary of Defense to inform the social science community of national security issues and to develop DoD’s social and human science intellectual capital. Proposals are to be submitted to the NSF and are reviewed according to NSF practices. For more information, consult the program solicitation and the frequently asked questions.

It offers visiting scholars a furnished work space, telephone, fax, computers, Internet access, conference space, a reference library, and access to George Washington University’s Gelman Library. Stays range from a few days to 12 months. Space is limited to APSA members and available to faculty members, post-doctoral fellows, and advanced graduate students from the U.S. and abroad.
