  1. APSA ANNUAL MEETING
    1. PARTICIPANT PREREGISTRATION AND HOUSING DEADLINE IS APRIL 25
      Attendees can preregister and reserve hotel rooms for the 2008 Annual Meeting. APSA requires all accepted participants to preregister for the meeting by April 25 in order to be included in the Preliminary Program. To preregister, login to MyAPSA and follow the steps for registration. Non-presenting attendees may preregister by August 1 to take advantage of the reduced preregistration rate.     2. Panel and Paper Revisions
      If your proposal was accepted, you may find information on your presentation that you wish to change. Login to MyAPSA and choose "Change Your Personal Information" to update your contact information or institution affiliation. To request an edit to your presentation details (e.g. paper title), contact the Division Chair or Related Group Organizer sponsoring your panel (roster of division chairs and related group chairs). NOTE: All revisions to your presentation must be approved by the Division or Related Group chair before they are added to the conference program.

    3. Short Courses Soon to be Announced
      Annual Meeting short course requests have been approved and information will be posted on the Website in mid-May. Short courses, which are held on Annual Meeting Professional Day, August 27, are half or full day sessions that provide opportunities for APSA attendees to enhance their knowledge and to reinvigorate teaching and research skills.     4. Travel Grant Applications Deadline is May 26
      APSA is collecting travel grant applications for the 2008 Annual Meeting. Grants provide travel assistance to U.S. graduate students, international graduate students studying in the U.S., unemployed APSA members, and international scholars. To be eligible, applicants must be current APSA members and preregistered for the Annual Meeting. More information about the travel grants application can be found at www.apsanet.org/section_542.cfm

    5. Sponsor or Coordinate an Annual Meeting Working Group
      Annual Meeting Working Groups consist of small groups of scholars who convene throughout the duration of the conference to discuss a common topic. Working Groups draw on the rich content of the Annual Meeting to allow small groups to interact intensively and on a sustained basis on a common set of themes; and, thus they can enrich member participation by creating a community and networking experience. If you would you like to sponsor or coordinate a Working Group, please contact workinggroups@apsanet.org. Details about the Working Groups will be posted online as they are established.     6. Business Meetings and Receptions
      Departments, organized sections, and related groups are invited to host a business meeting or reception during the 2008 Annual Meeting. Request forms, as well as available locations, days, and times are online. Business meetings and receptions will be scheduled in mid-May and APSA will contact you regarding the specifics of your event. Requests that were received by April 11 will be included in the Preliminary Program. Those received by July 9 will be included in the Final Program.

    7. APSA is Going Green!
      APSA is partnering with Carbonfund.org as part of the Association's efforts to become a more environmentally responsible organization. In order to make the Annual Meeting more environmentally friendly, APSA is offering attendees the option of offsetting their carbon footprint for attending the Annual Meeting by donating shares to CarbonFund.org.   2. APSA PROGRAMS AND GOVERNANCE NEWS
    1. Nominations Sought for Perspectives on Politics Editors
      Applications and nominations for the editor or editorial team of Perspectives on Politics are being sought for a term beginning in June 2009. Rogers Smith, University of Pennsylvania, will serve as chair of the search committee. Perspectives draws on rigorous, broad-based research and integrative thinking to provide insight on politics and the editorial process is open to innovative and novel approaches. If you have any questions about the journal, the resources that APSA provides in support of the editorial functions, or institutional commitments, please contact Michael Brintnall or Rogers Smith.

    2. Announcing APSA Africa Workshops
      APSA is pleased to announce an international project to convene annual residential workshops in Africa starting in July 2008 and will continue for three years. The project is supported by an $896,000 grant from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation to be distributed over three years. The 2008 workshop on "Political Participation" will be held in Dakar, Senegal, from July 6-27. Each three-week workshop will bring together up to 30 Africa-based scholars and cover substantive issues, methodologies, and reviews of research.     3. Deadline for Frank J. Goodnow Award Nominations is May 31
      The APSA Development Committee is soliciting nominations for the 2008 Goodnow Award, to be presented at the Annual Meeting in Boston. The Goodnow Award recognizes distinguished service to the profession and the Association, not necessarily a career of scholarship. This service may be performed by individuals, groups, and public and private organizations who have played a role in the development of the political science profession and the building of APSA.     4. New Video of Congressional Fellowship Program
      CFP BannerAPSA is pleased to announce the release of a new video describing the experiences political scientists, journalists, doctors, federal executives and international scholars gain through the APSA Congressional Fellowship Program, the nation's oldest and most prestigious congressional fellowship. Filmed by former CFP fellow Neil Simon with camera work by Ben Harper, and featuring ABC and NPR news correspondent Cokie Roberts, the brief video provides a clear view into how this program enhances public understanding of policy making and improves the quality of scholarship, teaching and reporting on American national politics.     5. April Issue of PS: Political Science and Politics Online Now
      The April 2008 issue of PS: Political Science and Politics is online now. This month's issue features guest editor Nelson Dometrius's symposium entitled "The Evolving Norms of Conferences Papers", which discusses the shifting customs of conference papers. APSA members may view this issue of PS as well as other APSA journals by logging into their MyAPSA account and scrolling to "Access Areas". Non-members may review abstracts without charge and get full text for a fee at Cambridge Journals Online.     6. Ralph Bunche Summer Institute Class of 2008 Announced
      APSA would like to congratulate the APSA Ralph Bunche Summer Institute (RBSI) Class of 2008! Twenty students from colleges and universities around the country were selected to attend the Institute from June 1 - July 3. Since 2000, the Institute has been hosted and co-sponsored by Duke University, under the direction of Dr. Paula D. McClain. It is also supported by a grant from the National Science Foundation, with operational cooperation and assistance from APSA.     7. Fund for Latino Scholarship Needs Your Contribution
      APSA has received an offer from an anonymous donor to match up to $5,000 in gifts from first-time donors to the Fund for Latino Scholarship. Since this offer was made, the Fund has received about $4,000 in qualifying donations, which means that almost $1,000 has yet to be matched. To ensure the fund receives the full $5,000 match, we would like to encourage those of you who have not yet donated to make a contribution. The Fund awards grants to initiatives that identify promising Latino undergraduates and encourages them to enter the profession of political science, as well as provide professional opportunities and financial assistance to Latino graduate study.     8. APSA Campus Teaching Awards Nominations Due July 1
      Each year, APSA and Pi Sigma Alpha recognize political science faculty who received teaching awards on their own campuses during the past academic year. These faculty receive a certificate honoring their achievement and are invited to a special reception at the APSA Annual Meeting. A roster of campus-wide teaching award winners, their affiliations, and titles of their awards is featured in the Annual Meeting Program. In addition, a tribute to the teaching award recipients, including their photographs and descriptions of their awards, is published in the October issue of PS: Political Science and Politics. The deadline to submit names of award recipients is July 1, 2008.

    9. Minority Student Recruitment Program Spring 2008
      APSA announces the Minority Student Recruitment Program (MSRP) Spring 2008 Call for Names and Departmental Participation. Join APSA in recruiting under-represented students in the discipline of political science by submitting names and contact information of undergraduate minority students who are interested in pursuing, or learning more about, graduate work in the field. The MSRP submission form is available online. In late spring, an updated list of student names will be sent to the APSA MSRP Recruiting Schools (departments participating in the MSRP Initiative) so that they can contact the students with information.     10. APSA Mentoring Initiative Call for Mentors
      The APSA Mentoring Program is calling for APSA Faculty Members to add their names to the 2008 APSA Mentor Database. The goal of the Mentoring Initiative is to provide a tool that connects, and provides opportunities for APSA members to mentor younger political scientists, both graduate students and junior faculty. You can assist APSA in its effort to provide support to students and junior faculty by becoming a Mentor today. APSA is particularly looking for mentors who can address questions regarding: junior faculty issues; the graduate student experience; research funding; and career options.     1. Johan Skytte Prize in Political Science Awarded to Rein Taagepera
      The Skytte Foundation at Uppsala University, Sweden, has awarded the Johan Skytte Prize in Political Science for 2008 to Rein Taagepera, University of California at Irvine and Tartu University, Estonia. The Skytte Prize will be awarded to Professor Taagepera in a ceremony in Uppsala on September 27, 2008. The Skytte Prize was established in 1994 from the donation made in 1622 by Johan Skytte, a member of the Swedish government and Chancellor of Uppsala University. Consisting of an award of $50,000, the prize is one of the largest and most prestigious in political science. More.

    2. Institute of Education Sciences FY 2009 Funding Opportunities
      The Institute of Education Sciences has begun its research grant competitions for FY 2009. Within IES, the National Center for Education Research is conducting one research competition (84.305A Education Research) that encompasses two topic areas that may be of interest to political scientists: education leadership and education policy, finance, and systems.     3. Northeastern Political Science Association Call for Papers
      The Northeastern Political Science Association will hold its 40th annual meeting on November 13-15, 2008 at the Omni Parker House Hotel in Boston, Massachusetts. NPSA invites paper, panel, and roundtable submissions from academics, graduate students, journalists, and practitioners. Proposals for papers, panels, or to serve as a chair and/or discussant must be submitted by June 15, 2008 through the All Academic Submission Website, which can also be reached through the NPSA Website.

APSA Headquarters and Centennial Center building The Centennial Center for Political Science and Public Affairs is a great resource for doing research in Washington, DC. It offers visiting scholars a furnished work space, telephone, fax, computers, Internet access, conference space, a reference library, and access to George Washington University’s Gelman Library. Stays range from a few days to 12 months. Space is limited to APSA members and available to faculty members, post-doctoral fellows, and advanced graduate students from the U.S. and abroad.
