Trends in Graduate Education

The APSA Departmental Services Committee cordially invites you to participate in a Short Course on “Trends in Graduate Education” during the 2008 Annual Meeting in Boston.

As Graduate Directors know, the world of graduate education is always changing. This short course, sponsored by the APSA Committee on Departmental Services, offers Graduate Directors a chance to hear about trends and issues in graduate education and to learn about how their colleagues at other universities are adapting to them. These trends will also be addressed by eminent political scientists who have served as in high ranking administrative positions such as deans of graduate schools.

In addition, the session will feature a briefing drawn from APSA’s departmental survey on issues such as funding, graduate student teaching loads and average length of time to completion. APSA staff will illustrate how Graduate Directors can compile their own “peer group” for making comparisons between their department and others like it.  This short course will also provide an opportunity for interchange between Graduate Directors on issues of concern to them such as placement and funding.

• Theda Skocpol, Harvard University
• Elliot Slotnick, Ohio State University

How to Register:

The short course is complimentary for APSA Departmental Services Program members; the workshop costs $40 per person for non-DSP members and additional guests.
