Civic Education & Engagement

Education for civic engagement and responsive governance were founding objectives of the political science profession at the beginning of the 20th century and remain essential for the 21st century. Supporting and sustaining quality civic education has been an important theme throughout the history of the American Political Science Association.

Teaching Civic Engagement Across the Disciplines (2017)

Building on the 2013 book Teaching Civic Engagement: From Student to Active Citizen, this newer edition explains how campuses can promote high quality education for civic engagement, providing a wealth of examples of successful practices, techniques, and assessment strategies. It focuses on best practices across disciplines and campuses, evaluating the goals, challenges, and rewards of integrating civic education into the curriculum. You can find free digital copies of both books, as well as an online compendium of related resources on the companion website.

Data and Reports for the Profession

APSA offers a number of reports for the profession. Obtain reports on profession data; salaries; political science enrollments, majors, and degrees; and more.

Departmental Services Program

The APSA Departmental Services Program (DSP) assists political science teaching, scholarship, and service by providing resources for department chairs; data and reports on the profession; forums for departments to address common issues; and services for chairs, faculty, and students. The program is overseen by the Committee on Departmental Services.

Ethics for Faculty

Political scientists share problems in common with practitioners of other scholarly disciplines. They also frequently encounter ethical problems unique to their professional concerns. To assist scholars in working through problems and differences, APSA maintains a standing committee to oversee complaints and offers an authoritative statement of ethical principles for political scientists, particularly for those newly entering the profession.

Funding, Support and Programs for Political Science APSA sponsors several programs to support individual research and training endeavors, among them the Centennial Center programs. APSA also provides information about non-APSA funding opportunities for study and research in political science and related disciplines here.
