APSAnet.org Gets a NEW Look!
|
 |
February 1, 2005: APSA is proud to present a new website design and content structure. The site can still be found at www.apsanet.org but regular visitors will notice improved clarity and utility of the site.
Designed for political scientists, students, academic programs, press and the general public, APSAnet.org is now an even more valuable resource to all interested in keeping pace with resources, trends and news in political science.
Why change the site? The new, streamlined design was necessitated by the rapid growth of the APSAnet.org over the years (to 10,000+ pages to be exact!). With this much content, we understand that it hasn't always been easy to find what you were looking for on our website. (We know this all too well ourselves!) While we will continue to have a quantity of content on our new site, we are sure that users will find the quality of the site is improved.
What *is* different? The most important change is that the site is easier to navigate. A few notable advances are dynamic section linking along the sidebar and "breadcrumbs" following your path as you drill your way through the site. Visitors to the site will also notice that a considerable amount of new information has been added (and some pre-existing content may seem "new" because it was hard to find on the old site).
How did APSA do it? The new site has been improved through the use of a content management system (CMS) developed by Bean Creative of Alexandria, VA. While the conversion from the old to the new site was no easy task, APSA staff will now be able to directly maintain pages relating to their area of responsibility and do so with ease. The CMS will allow APSA to focus on adding new technologies to the site to do an EVEN better job of "networking a world of scholars." In the near future, a few of these improvements will include adding password-protected group pages for governance groups and interest area groups.
Use of innovative technologies like the CMS will enable APSA to leverage more effective means of communication and networking and to develop innovative services and programs for our constituencies. We continue to work toward making APSAnet.org a prime resource for everyone interested in information, opportunities, trends, and news in political science.
Polly Karpowicz, APSA Director of Web and Publications, managed this extensive website renovation and implementation. What does this mean for you? Now, you will have even MORE opportunities to keep pace with what is happening in political science. This is a key part of the Association's mission!
Speaking of keeping pace... Your bookmarks to internal pages on apsanet.org may need to be updated. Part of the strategy with our new site is to organize the content in a more logical and user-friendly way. While our main URL (www.apsanet.org) has not changed, you will find that some content has been moved to different places on the site. For example, you will now find the APSA Annual Meeting, APSA Teaching and Learning Conference and notices about other conferences in political science and related disciplines ALL under the Conferences section. (Makes more sense, no?)
In any case, we believe that you will not need to rely on bookmarks to find your way BACK to a page of interest on our new website. Rather, the new content structure along with an improved search engine will easily guide you directly to the content you seek. If not, then tell us about it!
Reactions? APSA is a community and as such relies on member feedback. Give it to us! We NEED and WANT to hear your feedback (the good and...). Send your comments and suggestions regarding our new site to Polly Karpowicz, Director of Web and Publications, pkarpowicz@apsanet.org.
Look for more exciting content as the new site evolves over the coming months.
