DSP: Annual Meeting Workshop and Events for Chairs

Events for Chairs at the 2013 APSA Annual Meeting

The 2013 Annual Meeting will feature a chairs workshop and luncheon and a theme panel on topics specifically oriented toward departmental officers. Additionally, there will be a job market and placement panel oriented to doctoral students, graduate directors, and faculty interested in both academic and nonacademic employment. All events are sponsored by the APSA Departmental Services Committee. More information is below.

Chairs Workshop and Luncheon: Department Leadership in a Changing Higher Education Environment - Friday, August 30, 12:00pm - 2:00pm

This workshop and luncheon is open to department heads only, and is scheduled for Friday, August 30, 12:00pm-2:00pm. Please RSVP for this event. A new feature this year is networking time before and after the workshop. Please join us from 11:30am-12:00pm, and 2:00pm-2:30pm to meet other department heads and talk shop.

DSP Roundtable: Diversity Issues in Departments
Saturday, August 31, 10:15am - 12:00pm

This roundtable is open to all, and will provide a venue for a thoughtful and productive discussion about diversity issues in political science departments.

DSP Roundtable: Thinking Outside the Box: Employment in Political Science
Friday, August 30, 4:15pm - 6:30 pm

The DSP will sponsor a roundtable on employment in political science, with an emphasis on non-academic jobs for political scientists. This event will be open to all and will be followed by a small job fair and a networking happy hour.

Annual Meeting Placement Interview Service

APSA provides space for employers, who have posted an eJobs listing, to interview candidates at the upcoming annual meeting. Candidates and employers should use the placement services online to schedule interviews. Over 1,000 interviews are conducted at the meeting; learn how your department can use this service.

2011 Workshop and Luncheon for Department Chairs

The 2011 Workshop and Luncheon for Department Chairs, "Unwitting Leader: How to be an Effective Department Chair, and Live to Tell About it" was held on Friday, September 2, 2011. The panel was comprised of current and former chairs who spoke about topics most department heads deal with at some time or another. These workshops led to the first entries of our new handbook for chairs.
