LaMont Toliver
 Director, Meyerhoff Scholarship Program
University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC)

LaMont Toliver is a native of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and was educated at the Virginia Military Institute, the University of Virginia, and the University of Maryland.

Before arriving at UMBC, LaMont taught psychology and sociology and served as Director of Assessment and Advising at the Virginia Military Institute.  He also served as an Educational Consultant with high schools and middle schools in Baltimore County. He continues to work regularly with public and private schools throughout the Washington, D.C. and Baltimore corridor. 

Currently, LaMont is the Director of the Meyerhoff Scholarship Program at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC).  The National Science Foundation (NSF), the National Academy of Science, the New York Times, and a host of other publications and organizations consider the Program to be the best of its kind in the country.  NSF said the program has the highest concentration of gifted and talented students majoring in the sciences, mathematics, and engineering in the country.  CNN, Maryland Public Television, Good Morning American, Public Broadcasting Company, and a host of newspapers and national publications, including USA Today, Washington Post, and the Baltimore Sun have featured the Program. 

About the Program
The Meyerhoff Scholars Program has been at the forefront of efforts to increase diversity among future leaders in science, engineering, and related fields. The program is entering its 21 year and the UMBC Meyerhoff family is now more than 800 strong, with 600 alumni across the nation and 300 students enrolled in graduate and professional programs.  The graduates are currently enrolled in M.D., Ph.D., or  MD/PhD. Programs at some of the finest universities in the country, such as: the University of Pittsburgh, Harvard, Morehouse School of Medicine, Meharry Medical College, Yale, Duke, MIT, Penn, Princeton, Maryland, Michigan, Stanford, Northwestern, Johns Hopkins, Virginia, Berkeley, Baylor, and Columbia, just to name a few.  
The program has been recognized by the National Science Foundation and The New York Times as a national model. Scores of representatives from federal agencies, various institutions of higher education, and corporations across the country have visited UMBC’s campus to learn more about the program’s success. The College Board’s National Task Force on Minority High Achievement praised the Meyerhoff Scholars Program as an example that could provide broader educational lessons for the entire nation.

LaMont’s awards and honors include being named a Baltimore Sun “African American Achiever in 2001; the 2001 Arthur J. Rooney, Sr., Courage Award Winner by the Pittsburgh Steelers and the United Way of Allegheny County in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania;  Who’s Who Among American Educators; and an Honorary Member of The Golden Key National Honor Society, and the 2005 Anne Arundel County and Annapolis, Maryland Boys and Girls Clubs Service to Youth Award Winner. 

LaMont is married to the former Lisa Redd and they have four sons, Jacquet, Julian, Jordan, and Tristan.
