Organized Section Dissertation Awards

The following dissertation awards will be presented by the Organized Sections of APSA at the 2008 Annual Meeting in Boston. Individuals interested in submitting nominations for these prizes may do so by January 15, 2008, unless otherwise specified below.

One copy of the nominated dissertation should be submitted to each committee member, unless otherwise noted. For detailed information on deadlines and submission policies, and who should receive nominations, see the organized section's page as directed in each of the following descriptions.


LEGISLATIVE STUDIES
Carl Albert Dissertation Award
Topics may be national of subnational in focus-on Congress, parliaments, state legislatures, or other representative bodies. Dissertation must have a 2006 or 2007 copyright date. The deadline for submission is January 1, 2008. Terms for submitting dissertation: (1) one copy sent to each member of the committee; (2) no more than one submission per Ph.D. granting department; (3) letter form the department indicating the selection; and (4) a letter from the dissertation chair, or other appropriate committee member, describing the significance of the work. PRESIDENCY RESEARCH
George C. Edwards III Dissertation Award

Given annually for the best dissertation in presidency research completed and accepted during the 2007 calendar year (January 1, 2007-December 31, 2007).  The recipient will received a $200 award.  To be considered for the award, nominees must submit the following documents to each member to the Award Committtee: (1) a hard copy of the dissertation, (2) a .pdf of the dissertation on a CD, (3) a nominee form, and (4) a nominator form and letter.  The Award Committee welcomes nominations by dissertation committee chairs or committee members.  Nominations are to be submitted by February 1, 2008.

RELIGION AND POLITICS
Aaron Wildavsky Dissertation Award
For the best dissertation on religion and politics completed and accepted in 2007. The deadline for nominations/submissions is March 1, 2008. For more details, see the Religion and Politics Organized Section.


URBAN POLITICS
Best Dissertation Award
Nominations are invited for the best dissertation on urban politics, completed and accepted in 2007. Hard copies of dissertations should be sent to each member of the award committee. The deadline for submissions is March 1, 2008. For more details, see the Urban Politics Organized Section.


SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY, AND ENVIRONMENTAL POLITICS

Virginia Walsh Best Dissertation Award
For the best dissertation in science, technology and environmental politics finished in the last two years. The deadline for nominations/submissions is April 1, 2008.  For more details, see the Science, Technology, and Environmental Politics Organized Section.


WOMEN AND POLITICS

Best Dissertation Award
For the best dissertation on women and politics completed and accepted in 2007. To be eligible, a dissertation must be completed and successfully defended in in the previous calendar year. The deadline for submissions/nominations is January 15, 2008. Please send a copy of the dissertation to each committee member, along with a letter of recommendation by the Chair of the Dissertation Committee. For more details, see the Women and Politics Organized Section.


EUROPEAN POLITICS AND SOCIETY
Best Dissertation Award
Given for the best dissertation on European Politics and Society filed during the previous year. Deadline for submissions/nominations: March 1, 2008. For more details, see the European Politics and Society Organized Section.

POLITICS AND HISTORY
Best Dissertation in the Field of Politics and History
Given for the first time at the 2008 APSA convention.  Nominations of outstanding dissertations from Ph.D.s awarded in either 2006 or 2007.  The deadline for initial nominations is March 1, 2008.  For more details, see the Politics and History Organized Section.

POLITICAL ECONOMY
Mancur Olson Dissertation Award
for the best dissertation completed and accepted in the previous two years. The deadline for submitting dissertations to the Olson committee is March 1, 2008. For more details, see the Political Economy Organized Section.


POLITICAL PSYCHOLOGY
Best Dissertation Award
For the best dissertation in political psychology filed during the previous year. Send a hard copy of the dissertation to each committee member. Self-nominations are accepted. All nominations should include a letter of support from the chair of the dissertation committee that addresses the contribution of the dissertation to the field of political psychology. RACE, ETHNICITY AND POLITICS
Best Dissertation Award
The Race, Politics, and Ethnicity Section of the American Political Science Association is accepting nominations for Best Dissertation completed in the period January 2007 to December 2007. Nominations and accompanying materials will be accepted until April 25, 2008
.  Nominations can be made by chairs of dissertation committees or individuals completing the dissertation. A nomination must include a precis of the dissertation (no more than 20 pages) and a brief cover letter explaining how the dissertation expands our understanding of race, ethnicity, and politics. After a review of the nomination materials submitted, members of the Best Dissertation Committee will request 4 hard copies of the complete dissertation of some nominees. COMPARATIVE DEMOCRATIZATION
Juan Linz Award
The Juan Linz prize, for the Best Dissertation in the Comparative Study of Democracy was presented for the first time at the 2005 APSA Annual Meeting. For inquiries concerning this award, please contact Award Committee Chair Jonathan Hartlyn. For more details, see the Comparative Democratization Organized Section.


HUMAN RIGHTS
Best Dissertation Award
Political Science dissertations that focus on human rights and that are filed in academic year 2007 or 2008 are eligible for the award competition. Copies of the nominated dissertation and a letter of support from the dissertation Chair, which should specify the contribution of the work to the field of human rights, should be received by members of the Dissertation Award Committee by May 31, 2008. For more details, see the Human Rights Organized Section.
