Description: What is the place of medieval political thought within the study of modern politics?  Is medieval political thought simply a relic of a distant past that must be unearthed and investigated solely for historical reasons?  Does medieval political thought contain within itself a logical continuity that can be explained and categorized correctly?  Are modern Western politics indebted to the political thought of medieval thinkers?  Can the contemporary West learn anything from its medieval past?  Can medieval political thought enhance the education of contemporary political scientists or is it simply an useless distraction?  Politica: The Society for the Study of Medieval Political Thought is sponsoring a panel at the 2010 annual meeting of the American Political Science Association to consider the important question and theme of “Why Study Medieval Political Thought?”  Papers that engage the above questions or that pursue new lines of inquiry within this theme are welcomed.
