Dates: July 7-August 15, 2008

The 41st Essex Summer School takes place between 7 July and 15 August 2008. The School consists of three two-week sessions. Each session offers a variety of courses. Courses run for either two weeks, one week, or three days over a weekend. Courses consist of at least one lecture and a practical session daily. Most courses deal with techniques of data collection, analysis, and model building. The Summer School also offers some courses on non-statistical but innovative approaches to social science. All Summer School instructors are experts in their field.

Class numbers will be limited so that each participant can receive personal attention from Instructors. Intending participants should apply as soon as possible. Admission to the more advanced courses may require prior attendance at specified courses.

The Summer School places considerable importance on an adequate mathematical foundation for the conventional modes of statistical analysis in the social sciences. To this end, an intensive course on Mathematics for Social Scientists is offered throughout the School, which participants may (but need not) take, either in conjunction with other courses scheduled for that session or as a stand-alone course.

The language of instruction is English. Participants must be fluent in spoken English.
