James Madison Program in American Ideals and Institutions

The James Madison Program in American Ideals and Institutions at Princeton University is dedicated to the pursuit of scholarly excellence in the fields of constitutional law and political thought. Sponsored by Princeton's Department of Politics, the Program seeks to enrich the intellectual life of Princeton students and faculty by exploring American constitutional principles and structures through research, and public discussion.

The Program invites college and university professors and other professionals with established records of scholarship to apply for appointments as Research Fellows for the academic year 2009-2010. Among the research fellowships offered are the Ann and Herbert W. Vaughan Visiting Fellowship and the William E. Simon Visiting Fellowship in Religion and Public Life. The Program also invites applications for the Garwood Visiting Fellowship. The Garwood Visiting Fellowship can be for one semester or the academic year. Garwood Fellows teach at least one undergraduate course in the Department of Politics on statesmanship and presidential leadership.

All James Madison Program Research Fellows will spend an academic year in residence at Princeton University. They enjoy access to Firestone Library and a wide range of other facilities and activities throughout the University.

Research Fellows are expected to devote full time to their proposed research. They are, however, encouraged to attend or participate in various activities of the Program, including faculty-graduate student seminars, colloquia, and public lectures.

James Madison Program Fellows will ordinarily have a doctorate or a professional post-graduate degree. Fellowships are open to all regardless of citizenship. Fellows normally receive a stipend of one-half their academic-year salary plus a living allowance. The fellows’ home institutions are expected to provide at least half of their academic-year salaries in addition to all benefits.

Early-career scholars without ongoing positions may apply for fully-funded postdoctoral appointments.

Applications are evaluated on the basis of (1) the significance of the proposed research; (2) the quality of the applicant's past research; and (3) the contribution the applicant is likely to make to higher education in the future.

How to Apply:
For full consideration, applicants should submit by the deadline:

a curriculum vitae;
a scholarly paper written in the past three years;
a statement (no more than 1,500 words) describing the proposed research;
informal summary form available below;
two letters of recommendation to be sent directly to the Program by the deadline;
a confidential statement that indicates the applicant's salary for the current academic year, what financial support their home institution and other sources are likely to provide, and what support they are likely to need from the Program.

The deadline for application materials is December 1, 2008 for appointments beginning in September 2009. Awards will be announced in March. Completed applications should be sent by post or reliable express mail service, not by email or facsimile.
