CAREER AND ACCOMPLISHMENTS
Janet Box-Steffensmeier is the Vernal Riffe Professor of Political Science, Professor of Sociology, and Director of the Program in Statistics and Methodology, at the Ohio State University. She holds a B.A. in political science and mathematics from Coe College (1988), and Ph.D. in political science from the University of Texas at Austin (1993).
Box-Steffensmeier's primary focus is American Politics. She is the coauthor of Event History Modeling: A Guide for Social Scientists (Cambridge University Press, 2004). A coedited volume with Henry Brady and David Collier, Oxford Handbook of Political Methodology, is in progress and offers commentary not just on where the field has been in the realms of quantitative and qualitative methodology, but positive suggestions about where it is heading by being inclusive of alternative methodologies.
She is a former member of the executive committees of APSA's sections on Elections, Public Opinion, and Voting Behavior, Legislative Studies, and president of Political Methodology. She is a council member and past program co-chair of the Midwest Political Science Association. Previous APSA responsibilities include serving on the Annual Meeting and Technology Ad-hoc Committees. She has recently served on the editorial boards of the American Political Science Review, American Journal of Political Science, Journal of Politics, Electoral Studies, Legislative Studies Quarterly, Political Analysis, and Women and Politics. She will be serving as an Associate Editor for the American Journal of Political Science starting in 2006. She is a coeditor of the Legislatures and Parliaments Series for Ohio State University Press (with David Canon).
Her awards include the Emerging Scholar Award from the Elections, Public Opinion, and Voting Behavior Section and the Gosnell Award for best work in political methodology on two occasions. She has received the Excellence in Mentorship Award from the Women's Caucus, Mortar Board Recognition for Outstanding Teaching, and Honorable Mention for the Rowman & Littlefield Award for Innovative Teaching.
STATEMENT OF VIEWS
I welcome the opportunity to serve the membership and think my commitment to methodological breadth and diversity is particularly important for APSA governance at this time. I am interested in bringing my experiences and knowledge from participation in the governance of APSA's sections and involvement in other national associations to bear when considering the goals and directions of our association. I would work to foster interdisciplinary ties, which expand our world view and definitions of diversity. I would also strive to build upon APSA's efforts to build a dialogue with policy practitioners.
