Gary W. Cox is Distinguished Professor of Political Science at the University of California, San Diego. Prior to coming to UCSD, he taught at the University of Texas at Austin (1982-1984, 1986--1987) and Washington University in St Louis (1984--1986). He holds a B.S. in history (1978) and a Ph.D. in Social Science (1982) from the California Institute of Technology.

In addition to numerous articles in the areas of legislative and electoral politics, Cox is author of The Efficient Secret (winner of the 1983 Samuel H. Beer dissertation prize and the 2003 George H. Hallett Award), coauthor of Legislative Leviathan (winner of the 1993 Richard F. Fenno Prize), author of Making Votes Count (winner of the 1998 Woodrow Wilson Foundation Award, Luebbert Prize and Best Book in Political Economy Award); and coauthor of Elbridge Gerry's Salamander. His latest book, Settingthe Agenda, will be out in September 2005. A former Guggenheim Fellow, Cox was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 1996, received the William H. Riker Prize in 2004, and was elected to the National Academy of Sciences in 2005.

Cox's professional activities include service as a member of the Board of Overseers of the National Election Study, as a consultant to the Comparative Study of Electoral Systems project, as a member of the APSA Council, as a section chair for the APSA Annual Meeting, and as a member  of the Executive Committee for the  Legislative Studies Section of APSA, among other things. He currently chairs the department of political science at UCSD.
