Symposium: The Politics of Same-Sex Marriage

The issue of same-sex marriage was never more relevant than on November 3rd, 2004. For a majority of the lesbian, gay bisexual, transgendered (LGBT) community, the post-election hangover brought disappointment and self-reflection. Thrust onto the national scene only months earlier, same-sex marriage suffered crushing defeats at the polls in 11 states and faced acrimony on the campaign trail from a now-reelected and emboldened White House.

Had the evolving conservative case against same-sex marriage won the election for President Bush? What effect would minority stress have on the community in this new post-election world? What parallels could the LGBT community draw from the successful battle for same-sex marriage in Canada and from past African-American civil rights successes? Most important, what next awaits the issue in the courts and in the court of American public opinion?

In this symposium, The Politics of Same-Sex Marriage, guest editor Gary Segura pulls together a diverse group of scholars for a thorough discussion of these issues and the place of same-sex marriage in North American life.
