Guatemala Scholars Network
http://www.vanderbilt.edu/AnS/Anthro/GSN/

The Guatemala Scholars Network is an organization of over 300 academics and professionals whose major research field is Guatemala.  This homepage is presented as part of the GSN mission to foster communication among scholars; to share information and stay informed about the situation in Guatemala; to provide a forum for Guatemalan voices to be heard in North America; and to support the renaissance of Mayan intellectual and academic activity taking place in Guatemala. was formed in 1982, as an outgrowth of the 1981 National Teach-In on Guatemala. That event was organized in response to the intensified violence in Guatemala, violence which threatened our work and the lives of our Guatemalan informants and friends.

The goals of the Guatemala Scholars Network are:

  • to maintain communication among scholars and others;
  • to share information about publications and other resources of interest;
  • to stay informed about the situation in Guatemala so that we may better pursue our research and professional activities in that country;
  • to provide a forum for Guatemalan voices to be heard in North American discussions of Guatemala; and
  • to support the renaissance of Mayan intellectual and academic activity current taking place in Guatemala.

Network activities include:

  • publication of The Guatemalan Scholars Network News, a quarterly newsletter
  • sponsorship of panels for LASA congresses and for the meetings of the American Anthropological Association
  • financial support for the participation of Guatemalans on these panels, and
  • financial and intellectual support for educational endeavors and scholarly work by Mayan students of academic promise.

The Network is loosely associated with the LatinAmerican Studies Association and holds its business meetings in conjunction with LASA's Congresses.

The officers of the Guatemala Scholars Network include a National Coordinator, a Treasurer, and an eight person Steering Committee. Decisions about Network policies and projects are made by this group and by Network members during the business meetings. Further information about the Network may be obtained from the national coordinator, Susan A. Berger:
